On in-house sound
If you want to save budget by using the venue's in-house system, okay. But in my experience it's either inadequate, broken, or comes without a technician to handle what comes up during an event. And when it fails, your guests will look at the supervisor for the fix.
Yes, saying that is an upsell. It's also true.
One recent event: ceiling-mounted speakers, speeches happening directly underneath one of them, and the venue's console sitting indoors on another floor while the event was outside. That's feedback nobody can fix from where they're standing.

How I Size Sound
Not sure which package fits? Here’s the logic I use - the same judgment that goes into every quote.
The simple rule
About 50 guests per speaker is ideal, and 75 is the upper limit. The same goes for subwoofers. Bigger speakers and a room with good acoustics stretch that further, so I size the package to your headcount and the room.
Indoor vs outdoor
Outdoor events need more coverage - sound dissipates in open air. I account for this when recommending a package.
Subwoofers
A subwoofer adds bass - the physical sensation of music, not just the sound of it. Optional for background music and speeches; the difference-maker for DJ sets, dancing, and live bands.
Live bands
Three-piece and above require additional inputs - DI boxes, extra mic channels, sometimes a digital mixer. I handle this through the quote conversation, not the package list.

How much does it cost to hire a sound system in KL?
Sound systems start from RM450. The price is usually set by your guest count:
- RM450 for up to 25 pax
- RM700 for 25 to 50
- RM1,250 for 50 to 200
- RM1,500 for 200 to 300
- RM2,000 for 300 to 400
Past 400 guests it becomes a line array, which I quote to the venue. A sound system for an event is the same thing as a PA system, so these are PA hire prices too. Within the Klang Valley, delivery for sound is usually included.
Additional add-ons for band/DJ support, subwoofers, and digital mixers may be recommended.
How much does it cost to rent sound and lights for an event?
Sound and lighting are priced separately, so just add them together. Sound starts at RM450 and lighting at RM1,250, so the smallest combined setup starts at RM1,700. For 50 to 200 guests, the Standard sound package (from RM1,250) plus Face Lighting (from RM1,250) starts at RM2,500. Stage lighting, moving heads and venue-wide color step up from there.

How many speakers do I need for my event?
In my experience as a DJ, roughly one speaker and/or subwoofer for every 50 guests is ideal, and 75 is about the upper limit. Subwoofers are highly recommended if you want to motivate people to dance.
For 100 guests that means the Standard package (RM1,250) is an ideal minimum. Its Yamaha DBR12 speakers are bigger, so in a room with good acoustics the same package can stretch to 200 guests. Outdoor events might need more speakers to cover a wider area - I’ll let you know my recommendation!
